Come to me, horn-headed, light-bringer,
Bull-shaped, horse-faced goddess, who howls like a hound.
Mistress Of night and chthonic realms, sacred, black-clad,
'Round whom the star-traversing nature of
The world revolves around, you wax too great.
Lamp-bearer, shining and aglow,
Star-coursing, heavenly, torchbearer, fire-breather,
Hail, goddess, and attend your epithets.

The Taurus New Moon occurs at 3:17 AM Eastern on April 27. Read on for more on Hekate’s horns and her bullish attributes, plus tips for practice during the Taurus New Moon, and a meditation. To get started with Honoring Hekate on The Dark Moon, WATCH THIS.

Hekate’s association with bulls stampedes back well over 2,500 years. To the ancients who revered her, the bull was a symbol of fertility and fecundity, evoking wealth, status, and productivity. In ancient texts such as the one excerpted above, she is called upon with the attributes of what was the most powerful animal in agriculture, and often the most sacred of sacrifices.

Beyond the connection to her mightiness, the bull signified her association with the intersection between nature and the civilized. Bulls, both wild and domesticated, feared and valued, strange and familiar, conjure how many way back then perceived her, and we may well today.

Curiously, the ancients may have been connecting Hekate with the moon when they placed those horns on her head. Scholars posit that the horns symbolized the crescent moon. The horizontal crescent moon appears when the moon is just beginning a new cycle, or even the dim light around the new moon that’s a reflection which sometimes appears.

The night of the dark moon, which we usually call the new moon these days, was held in special regard then, as now, for rituals honoring Hekate. In my new book, Entering Hekate’s Cauldron, I connection the astrological significations of each of the new moons with aspects of Hekate, including some of her ancient epithets, along with tips for practice.

Honoring Hekate on The Taurus New Moon

Work with the invocation from the beginning of this article to connect with Hekate. Light a candle in a dark room and sincerely recite the words. She will come through. Perhaps in that moment, with words and symbols, or later in dreams, and in unexpected events. She speaks truth, always. Especially when her moon is in Taurus, the wisdom she shares may be especially strident.

· Epithets: Alkimos (Strong);Enodia (of The Road); Tauropolos (Straightforward)

· Meaning: The bull is closely associated with Hekate because the ancients viewed horns as symbolic of the crescent moon. Bulls, in general, corresponded with the Great Mother and fertility. Taurus is a sign of endurance and the everyday. Enodia in relation to Taurus evokes steady progress for all earthly endeavors. Turn to Hekate in Taurus for assistance with earthly productivity, from work to personal pursuits.

· Themes: Taurus assists with earthly concerns like work, home, and possessions. Petition Hekate in Taurus for increasing endurance and tenacity, as well as releasing it.

Taurus is very task-oriented. This new moon provides an opportunity to focus on the work of our craft, from thrifting (Taurus loves to shop) to refreshing altars. Taurus also loves food and nature. If you’ve never experienced leaving offerings at a crossroads at night to Hekate, it certainly is aligned with the signatures of this new moon.

Taurus is reliable and steadfast, like Hekate herself. And there is no “bull” about her, either. She definitely can call us on our BS. She says, “give me your shit, and stop this bullshit.” Those horns can give us a much need poke, too.

If you’re being called by Hekate, perhaps my new book will unlock her magick and mystery. You can read the first three chapters for free.
